Linda Moulton Howe:
Congratulations on your high-calibre reporting!
I do hope you will have a few minutes to read and consider the content of this letter.
Reason for this Brief
The upcoming 60-year anniversary of the Roswell incident prompts the following communication.
This subject arouses my interest on several counts:
First, the spectacle of possible interplanetary or interstellar visitation is in itself potentially the most tremendous event in earth history. I believe it is rightly the number one entry in any conceivable "Earthfile".
Second, even if not extraterrestrial, the occurrence of unidentified objects and their occupants in the air- and ground-space of any country should be a major security concern to its people and government.
Third, the problem in and of itself is quite intriguing: early reports of 'crashed discs' etc. from reliable sources later countermanded by denials and cover-stories etc. from 'official' sources, along with the many circumstantial clues and occurences are alone sufficient to attract the attention of our highest investigative faculties.
Finally, there is a personal connection --my earliest memories are from precisely that region of the country (White Sands, Holloman; later Wright-Patterson) in which so many of the events of 1947 et seq. are claimed to have taken place, and hearing mention of them brings out considerable nostalgia. This, coupled with my long-time researches into the sciences, makes the subject matter irresistible.
Initailly, like so many scientific/sceptical thinking people (Nick Pope, for example), I was inclined to dismiss the whole affair as mere fabrication, sensationalism, or, at best, exaggeration of much more mundane events. However, due to the persistent efforts of authors Charles Berlitz, William Moore, Stanton Friedman, Phillip Corso, and yourself (among others), I have become convinced that SOMETHING quite unusual did occur in the hinterlands of central New Mexico and elsewhere, in July 1947 and elsewhen.
Basic Thesis
My thesis is basically this: An alien spacecraft DID crash at Roswell NM in July 1947 --but by "alien" is meant terrestrial alien, or foreign national; and by spacecraft is meant an advanced aerial machine, capable of superior aeronautical performance, with the possibility of sub-orbital and orbital capability. (The possibility of interplanetary capability for these craft is, for the moment, not an issue.) The origin of the craft design itself is most likely Germany: there is considerable extant evidence that German scientists had been engaged in 'flying disc technology' for decades prior to 1947 (quite possibly beginning during WWI). In the closing years of WWII, then, a small cadre of scientists, not liking the course of political events, could have decided in secret to form a separate extra-political entity (the 'Group'), with the intent of themselves surviving intact the collapse of the German Reich, yet independent of the Allied powers as well. I suspect the final deci!
sion for this would have occured in 1944, although this 'Plan B' had probably been in the works for years. Scientists of other nationalities could also have been included into the Group. The principal motivation of the Group was to keep advanced weapons technology under their own control and out of the hands of the then prevailing political and military leaders. Evidence for this sort of pre-emption may be inferrred from three sources:
1. In the final weeks of the Reich, Josef Goebbels had made repeated announcements of a 'powerful new weapon' that the German scientists were on the verge of completing, and which would turn the tide of the war. (Phillip Corso alludes to this in his book.)
2. In 1942-43, Werner Heisenberg had actually met in secret with some of his international pre-war colleagues (Neils Bohr and others) with the proposal to keep nuclear weapons technology in the hands of scientists and out of reach of the military powers. We can hardly guage the consequences for civilization had such a proposal actually succeeded. (It would be rather as if the JASONS had decided to form a secret entity of their own, outside of governmental oversight.)
3. General Reinhard Gehlen actually accomplished a parallel operation within the intelligence community --through Operation 'Paper Clip' a small but significant victory for German espionage was planned for the end of the war, which succeeded in covertly maintaining influence with British and American intelligence services during the Cold War.
Origin of the Craft
The 'powerful new weaponry' never materialized for the political Reich, though it nevertheless WAS DEVELOPED.
[An alternate thesis asserts that the Axis government actually controlled the operation, and has continued underground. The weakness in this hypothesis is that if true, German scientists would have remained loyal to the Reich, and would have enabled an axis military victory through the new weapons technology. Since this was not the outcome of WWII, we should surmise that the scientists did in fact break ranks with the political establishment and chart their own course into the future.] These scientists formed the core of a supra-national post-war technological power, whose principal signature is seen in the 'ufo' sightings and incidents which have so markedly characterized the same post-war era.
The timeline of this development is of particular significance. Pre-war intelligence confirms the German research into the flying disc technology; throughout the war, sightings of 'Foo Fighters' became more frequent; and less than two years after the end of WWII, the famous crash in the Roswell area occured. Further sightings and related events have persisted to the present day, evidencing ever more sophisticated technology. Is the timing mere coincidence?
The "Aliens"
A convenient double entendre occurs in the term 'alien'. As it could refer either to a genuine extraterrestrial or to a foreign national, it enables easy manipulation of a cover story.
The most likely identity of the aliens, I strongly suspect, is that of Japanese Nationals. More precisely, the occupants of the craft were principally Japanese children (at least originally), who had been 'volunteered' for the mission, as was often the custom in wartime and pre-wartime Japan, by super-patriotic parents with an almost mystical adulation for the Imperial Power. It is furthermore probable that these children had been anatomically modified to suit them better for their misssion. The evidence for these assertions may be summarized as follows:
1. The recovered bodies are always reported to be small, generally between 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 feet in stature, with very slight
frames. (The Japanese are, on the whole, a notoriously short and small-boned people to begin with.)
2. The head is large in proportion to the body. (Generally true of all children.)
3. The eyes are large, dark, almond-shaped and slanty. (Characteristic appearance of Japanese nationals.)
4. Children's coffins were initially ordered by the military authorities for these bodies.
5. The relative large proportion of the head, lungs and heart usually reported for these specimens is quite logically due to
prior surgical evisceration of other 'unnecessary' internal organ systems. This is so extraordinary a feature of these bodies
that it necessitates a separate special analysis:
a. Just this lack of internal organs is regularly reported by those with direct or indirect access to the autopsies.
b. The smallness of the mouth aperature indicates that it was inadequate for food consumption.
c. The lack of any type of food preparation facilities in the craft confirms this supposition.
d. It is well known that all essential nutrients can in fact be absorbed by the human body directly therough the epidermis.
A 'soup' of free amino acids, essential fatty acids, and simple carbohydrates, along with properly prepared solutions of
necessary vitamins and minerals can be applied to the gross surface area of the body, to be successfully absorbed into the
bloodstream.
e. Strangest of all, initial reports, or leaks of reports, rumor that the 'greys' or 'aliens' consumed their nutrients in just such
a primitive manner --by smearing the food product directly over their skins.
This last point, initially regarded with disbelief as mere science-fiction fantasy, is quite possibly the very best evidence for the general thesis. Not only would removal of all digestive organs (and possibly the reproductive and vocal systems as well) result in a significantly lighter body mass for space travel, the physiological efficiency would likely be significantly improved-- less supplies, less trouble, with greater function of the brain and nervous system, so critical to the operation and guidance of the craft. As may now be surmised, this sort of biological modification on human guinea pigs was not at all beyond the scruples or capability of the Axis scientists (and possibly some of their Allied peers), in their zeal to create some form of 'super race' to extend their dominion. But since they had separated themselves from the various political and military authorities, we cannot know their subsequent political leanings or social philosophy, except that they are not!
explicitly an intact political survival of the Reich itself.
We can at present only speculate about their-long term goals and directives.
Circumstantial Corroboration
Furthermore, the thesis accounts for several puzzles and inconsistencies in the other 'stories' regarding the events at Roswell and elswhere, form June-July 1947 et seq.:
If these were truly extraterrestrial aliens, how could they have so ineptly crashed their vehicle in northern New Mexico after so expertly travelling through light-years of interstellar space?
And if they did somehow crash, why would they have been so unprotected as to allow capture by mere terrestrial powers?
(Certainly, one should think, other alien craft would have come to their rescue.)
Why are they so anatomically humanoid, and why is their technology so readily adaptable to human needs?
(One should suppose, rather, that they would not resemble any terrestrial complex life form, and that their technology would
be so different, and so advanced, as to be virtually inscrutable to humans.)
Why would any military power, KNOWINGLY confronted with a vastly superior extraterrestrial technology, have attempted combative engagements using conventional terrestrial weaponry? (Even ambitious military leaders are not so foolish as to pursue such aggressive policy, year after year, if faced with certain defeat.)
Only if the 'alien' technology were sufficiently close to state of the art contemporary technnology (at best a few decades ahead), could it ever be entertained that obstruction, interception, or capture would be possible, or that such technology could ever be smoothly and successfully introduced into state-of-the-art industrial production. Thus, the aliens, and their technology, are in fact terrestrial in origin --though quite unusual-- and quite advanced by ordinary standards.
The Case Corso
This brings us to the mission of Col. Phillip Corso. His book 'The Day After Roswell' is certainly an extremely candid account of an extraterrestrial visitation from a military perspective --so candid, in fact, that it must raise the question: Is this the genuine factual account, or is it a carefully constructed cover story for the real scenario described above? Evidence for the latter is suggested by several facts:
Corso was, by his own admission, already engaged in a cover story for industry --the artifacts presented for development were claimed by the Office of Foreign Technology to be just that --samples of debris collected from numerous accidents and downings of foreign aircraft. With only a slight adjustment in wording, this 'cover story' could just as well describe the real situation as outlined above. Why? Because the real situation would have been more damaging, and more embarrassing, to the post-war military-political establishment than the extraterrestrial story. It would also have been much more believable. The 'space alien' story could have been concocted precisely to be unbelievable, and hence dismissed, along with all the very real evidence, by the general public and uninitiated government personnel. Col. Corso's mission then was to deflect attention away from the real story. For if actually true, could he scarcely have gotten away with revealing so much super-secret info!
rmation? I believe he would have been abruptly 'silenced' before the book ever went to print. The real story is more damaging precisely because the aliens are indeed foreign nationals: meaning that the Allied powers did not altogether really win WWII. These 'aliens' would have been seen as a continuation of hostile wartime forces --an undefeated enemy threatening us with advanced technology. This is more than the government would be willing to admit openly. It would also explain the willingness to enage them militarily: being a remnant of a recently defeated political enemy, with technology just a little ahead of our own, a further military victory over the 'aliens' might reasonably have been contemplated in the immediate post-war era. This evidently proved to be a much more difficult undertaking than was originally supposed. Where the actual situation stands today, I could only speculate.
I am impressed with Col. Corso's sincerity, credentials and character, but I believe these were primarily in the service of the military command structure (who must have known what they really had), rather than of the general public.
Finally, regarding cattle mutilations and the abduction phenomenon, it is quite possible that these are carried out by said 'aliens' (in reality, eviscerated Japanese children, but now grown older) due to the necessity of supplying themselves with the very aforementioned nutrients unavailable to them through ordinary digestion. These beings would likely be faced with an ever-present struggle to remain alive --not only to perform their assigned mission, but perhaps also to try to understand their own predicament:
Having been raised from infancy for their specific purpose, without being given any knowlege of their real parentage, after surgical modification might have grown older actually believing what their 'designers' programmed into them --that they were aliens from some other star system with some special mission here.
It is not inconceivable that some of these might have broken free from their masters, and embarked on their own course of action. Obviously, many questions remain.
This, then, is my thesis in outline, which I believe answers the basic questions in the most scientific fashion. Of course, I do not at all exclude the extraterrestrial hypothesis, or various other hypothesis, from serious consideration; I advance the foregoing as the most credible explanation of the ufo phenomenon at present. A more exhaustive treatment of the issue (with references) may be forthcoming.

Linda Moulton Howe et al.,
One possible objection to the thesis advanced in my 16 June 2007 communication regarding the origin of the Roswell craft needs to be addressed. In the last communication, I offered the hypothesis that the 'alien spacecraft' was actually an advanced German flying machine, piloted by surgically modified Japanese children. My presentation did not discuss the pre-history of 'sightings' recorded in previous centuries. This latter, if true, would almost certainly point to extra-terrestrial origin of these earlier phenomena. But even this would not necessarily invalidate my thesis concering the Roswell event specifically. Both phenomena could be occuring since the mid-20th century. However, due to the extraordinary degree of reliable documentation for the Roswell event, I would also suggest that the surmise of Nick Pope could apply here: If some 80% of sightings are mistaken identities, and 15% are hoaxes or delusions, could we not presume that the remaining 5% (the real events)
have occured exclusively from the mid-20th century, and that previous sightings belong to the other 95%?
